Ondo Signs Controversial Contributory Pension Into Law

Ondo State governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, yesterday signed the controversial Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) into law amidst controversy trailing the introduction of the bill to the state workforce.
Governor Mimiko said the Bill was passed and signed into law in the interest of the civil servants who will benefit immensely from the.............
scheme.
Addressing government functionaries at the Cocoa Banquet Hall of the Government House in Akure, Mimiko disclosed that the poor sensitisation of workers on the benefits of the bill was the reason behind the controversy.
The governor, who further revealed that the Contributory Pension Scheme is a matter of law which every worker in the state must key into, denied insinuations that it was another means of taxing the civil servants in the state.
LEADERSHIP had reported penultimate week that workers in the state armed with placards protested at the State House of Assembly over the introduction of the bill in the state.
Many of the civil servants had also alleged that the introduction of the bill was to further ‘impoverish’ them, and vowed to use every legal means available to them to stop the state government by grounding all its activities if what they described as “hurried and forceful commencement of implementation of the scheme” without their consent was not reversed.
While promising that his administration will be transparent in the execution of the scheme, Mimiko commended  labour leaders in the state for their patience and cooperation since the inception of his administration.
Earlier, the attorney-general and commissioner for justice in the state, Eyitayo Jegede commended the lawmakers for the quick passage of the bill and assured the people that the scheme would ensure their socio-economic wellbeing.
