Ondo Sate Police
have arrested eight students of the Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, Ondo State for
allegedly belonging to a cult group. The students were arrested on Friday by
officers of the State Anti-Robbery Squad following an attack on the institution
on Friday. The suspects were allegedly arrested at their hideout following
intelligence.............
provided to the police.
Some students said
the cult members, armed with different kinds of weapons, attempted to enter the
main campus of the polytechnic, opposite Ikare-Owo-Akure Expressway, but were
prevented by the institution’s security officials. Unable to enter the
university, the cultists took over the expressway and started shooting
sporadically into the campus, witnesses said.
Nobody was injured
or killed as motorists and passers-by plying the route quickly took another
path in order to avoid being hit by stray bullets. The incident created panic
among the students; as some of them, who were already through with their first
semester examination, took their luggage and travelled to their various homes.
A student leader at
the institution, who sought anonymity for security reasons, said the cultists
invaded the institution in search of a student who belonged to another
confraternity. He said the bandits had earlier invaded one of the off-campus
hostels of the polytechnic called “Igbo lodu”, before moving to institution’s
gate.
“I think they were
in search of another cult member who belongs to another confraternity; because
according to students living around that area called Igbo lodu, the faces of
these hoodlums are very strange and they were walking freely in the afternoon,”
he said.
The spokesperson of
the state police command, Wole Ogodo, who confirmed the arrest, said the case
is being investigated.
